Stipe Comes Out To Help The Kids

R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe has confirmed his sexuality in a US magazine.

The frontman told Spin magazine that he made the decision to announce he's gay in order to be a role model for young gay people struggling to come to terms with their sexuality.

Stipe had previously called himself “a queer artist” when speaking to Time magazine in 2001.

In that interview he revealed that he had been in a relationship with "an amazing man" for three years at the time.

But in the latest interview Stipe says he feels celebrities should be more open about their sexuality to aid youngsters in the same position.

He tells Spin magazine: "I recognise that to have public figures be very open about their sexuality helps some kid somewhere out there."

"It was super complicated for me in the '80s," he says.

"I was totally open with the band and my family and my friends and certainly the people I was sleeping with. I thought it was pretty obvious."

R.E.M have recently completed their 14th studio album Accelerate, which comes out on 1 April.
