Gay Jasper Wins Project Catwalk
A young gay designer has won the third series of Sky One's Project Catwalk.
Jasper Garvida was crowned the winner of the show in the final, which aired last night.
Starting the show with 11 other aspiring designers, Jasper beat off the competition to make to the final three.
"It's been a long journey for me," said Jasper on winning the show.
"I guess I came to Project Catwalk to find myself and now I'm more confident as a person and as a designer."
"I just want my family to be proud of who I am," he added.
Before the series, Jasper had not come out as gay to his family. His mother, father and sister travelled to London for the final. During the show his father was moved to tears at his son's collection and afterwards it was all hugs and celebrations.
A tense final, filmed at the Royal Academy as part of London Fashion Week, saw him triumph over rivals housewife Viv and Canadian 21 year old Chelsea to scoop the £25,000 cash prize, plus a full feature spread in Grazia magazine and a collection with clothing range Oli.
Jasper dazzled the judges with his collection inspired by Salvador Dali's wife Gala.
The judges were designer and the contestant's mentor Ben de Lisi, Grazia style editor Paula Reed and fashion and lifestyle journalist Nick Ede.
"I felt it was completely breathtaking and built and built to a crescendo that I just wasn't prepared for," said de Lisi of Jasper's collection.
Others in attendance included the show's host Kelly Osbourne, and veteran fashion designer Zandra Rhodes, who set one of the series' challenges.
"I'm amazed at the quality of Jasper's work," said Zandra about his collection.
"I can't believe the detail in his workmanship, it’s knockout," she added.
Born in the Philippines, Jasper's family moved to Toronto when Jasper was 12-years-old. After getting into design as a teenager, he made his way to London to study at the Central St Martins College of Art and Design.
On graduation Jasper's first appointment was designing for Couture Label Michiko Koshino. As chief designer Jasper created collections for two seasons before taking up an opportunity to further his knowledge in all aspects of the fashion industry by moving to the High Street to design for the mass market.
