Gay New Yorker Makes Complaint Against Polish Leader

A gay New Yorker has complained after the Polish president used an image of him and his partner to warn against gay marriages.

Gay New Yorker Makes Complaint Against Polish Leader Lech Kaczynski used the video clip from Brendan Fay's marriage to Tom Moulton in a televised address to the Polish nation on Monday night to warn against the dangers of adopting the new EU constitutional treaty which includes a Charter for Fundamental rights.

Mr Kaczynski claims this would open the door to same-sex marriage in Poland.

In his speech Mr Kaczynski said it would be "against the universally accepted moral order in Poland and force our country to introduce an institution in conflict with the moral convictions of the decided majority of our country."

The next day Brendan Fay was contacted by Polish immigrants and reporters seeking his response to the speech.

"My initial reaction was one of surprise and shock really," said Brendan, a gay activist and co-founder of the All Inclusive St Patrick's Day Parade in Queens.

"I started getting translations of the phrase the president used as the image appeared...My reaction was just really... I thought, 'oh my God, what an insult'".

Fay, an Irish-born documentary filmmaker, submitted his complaint to the Polish Consulate in New York on Tuesday.

Though homosexuality was legalised in 1932 in Poland, a survey from 2005 found 89% of the population stating that they consider homosexuality an "unnatural" activity and only half believe homosexuality should be tolerated.

An 2006 European Commission poll indicated Polish public opinion was opposed to same-sex marriage and to adoption by gay couples, with 74% and 89% of Poles respectively were opposed to same-sex marriage and adoption by gay couples.

Following the rise to power of Poland's Roman Catholic right-wing government Polish gay rights groups claim that thousands of Polish gays have moved to Britain to escape "increasing persecution."
