San Miguel de Tucuman, capital of the province, is one of the most important commercial, cultural, and industrial centers of the Argentine northwest. It is worth visiting the Historic House of Independence, the Cathedral, the Casa de Gobierno (Government House), the churches of La Merced and San Francisco, the House of Parliament, and the Casa del Obispo Colombres, which houses the Folklore Museum.

Some of the most important places to visit in Tucuman include: Tafi del Valle, which lies at the foot of the Sierra del Aconquijal; El Cochuna Provincial Park, with a large variety of sub-tropical vegetation; the Laguna del Tesoro (Treasure lagoon), surrounded by high mountains and forests; the Parque Los Menhires, with its 130 stone monoliths carved by the Tafi Indians; and the Ruinas de Quilmes, which are ruins of a fortified citadel built by the Quilmes Indians.

If you are interested in traditions, don't miss the Fiesta de la Pachamama, dedicated to Mother Earth, which is held in Amaicha del Valle at carnival time. In Simoca, there is a popular fair on Saturday mornings.

Visitors can enjoy trekking and mountaineering in Sierra del Aconquija, and fishing and water-sports in the reservoirs. Golf is also available at San Miguel de Tucuman, Villa Nougues, and El Siambon.

Tucuman is famous for its ponchos made in Amaicha and Tafi del Valle; leatherwork and bone, alpaca, and palm items as well as instruments such as quena, erke, caja, bombo and pincullo. There's an Arts and Crafts Market round the Historic House in San Miguel de Tucuman.
