The city of Buenos Aires is the capital of the Argentine Republic and is located in the southern hemisphere. The city extends on a plain and has 202 square kilometers (78.3 sq miles). Including the metropolitan area, the total population is above ten millions, making it one of the 10 most populated urban centers in the world.
The natural borders of the city are the Rio de la Plata and the Riachuelo. The rest of the city is surrounded by General Paz Avenue (north to west) which provides a fast connection between the city and the Greater Buenos Aires, an area with important business and industrial activity.
Buenos Aires enjoys a mild climate all year round. In winter, cold is moderate during the day, but temperature considerably falls at night. In summer, the weather is hot and humid. Activities are not hampered since they are mild or last a short time. In the sunny days of autumn and spring, mornings are slightly cold; the temperature rises at midday and drops again at night.
Argentina's official language is Spanish. Something to note is the use of 'vos' (you) instead of the Spanish 'tu' for informal treatment, and the use of 'che' to address a person.
The official religion is that of the Roman Catholic Church. However, Argentina recognizes the freedom of worship. There are also other places of public worship, such as the Jewish central synagogue and the Mosque of Palermo neighborhood.
You may visit the city all the year round. If you are planning to stay for several days, you may visit places around the city such as the Delta (of the Parana river), estancias (ranch houses), or Martin Garcia island.
Buenos Aires has many shopping centres which are open from 10 am to 10 pm, including Saturdays and Sundays. Banks are open from 10 am to 3 pm. Cash extractions and other transactions may be made in ATMs, 24 hours a day. The city also boasts many coffee houses and confiterias (patisseries) where you can find special offers for the typical coffee and milk with medialunas (croissants), both for breakfast and merienda (tea) time.
The country code is 54 and the area code for Buenos Aires is 11. Buenos Aires has many public telephone booths. These support urban, national and international calls. The time zone corresponds to GMT-3 and currently no change is made in the summer months.
The country's currency is the Argentine Peso. Credit cards and dollars are accepted in most shops. Electricity runs on 220 volts. It is advisable to bring an adaptor.
