First Trans TV Presenter In India

A 28-year-old transgender woman is to become the first trans presenter in India.

Ippadikku Rose features on a 30-minute weekly show, which began this week on the country's Star-Vijay TV channel.

The programme aims to discuss "taboo" subjects like homosexuality, different types of sexuality, child abuse and sexual abuse.

Rose, who was previously called Ramesh Venkatesan, hopes to alter public opinion about trans people in India, many of whom are cast out by their families and forced beg and seek commercial sex work.

She will be interviewing celebrities and hosting debates on phobias, rebellion, beauty as well as sexuality.

“I am hoping my mother and grandmother too will sit with my dad and me and watch the programme,” Rose told The Indian Express.

“Otherwise, I am sure they will watch it on the sly,” she added.

Rose currently lives with her family members in Chennai, and has faced hostility against her transition, having been thrown out of home twice for dressing up in women’s clothes.

A trained chemical engineer, Rose earned a degree in Biomedical Engineering in the US and won a beauty pageant in Chennai last year.

“It is not for sensation that we chose Rose. She is a perfect anchor material for the talk-show, considering she was educated abroad for a while,” programme head, Pradeep, told reporters last November last year when plans for the show were announced.
