L Word Will Return For Sixth Season

The L Word is to return for a sixth season, but the makers of the successful lesbian drama say it will be the last.

Showtime has reportedly renewed the drama for a sixth run, making it one of the premium network's longest-running series.

According to Reuters, eight episodes have been ordered and will go into production in early summer for an early 2009 premiere.

Showtime executives and series creator/executive producer Ilene Chaiken say just eight episodes were "creatively what was needed to wrap up the story lines."

The series, which follows the lives of a group of lesbian friends who live in LA, was the first lesbian primetime drama on television when it debuted in January 2004.

Chaiken, who created the series with Kathy Greenberg and Michele Abbott, told the publication the show would live on, interactively.

"This is by no means the end of The L Word,"' she said.

"The brand and the social network community, OurChart.com, will continue to live and be a destination for lesbians everywhere and a lasting tribute to what The L Word has accomplished."

She added that fan input will play a part in wrapping up the series' story lines, noting the role that viewer input has played in the past.

Season 5 is currently showing in the US, with the final episode due to air on 23 March. Living in the UK was showing season 4 last summer, but said at the time it had no plans to buy the rights to further seasons.
