Prostate Cancer Awareness Week

Prostate Cancer Awareness Week: 10-16 March 2008. Find out more at www.prostate-cancer.org.uk and www.realmendo.org.uk. Did you know that this week is prostate cancer awareness week? Probably not. Every year about 27,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and every year about 10,000 men die from it. The majority of work promoting prostate cancer awareness recently has focussed on men regretting that they won't be around to see their children grow up, or testimonials from women widowed as a result of prostate cancer.

But the prostate is perhaps of special importance to gay men, as it's the gland that accounts for most of the pleasurable sensations we get from being fucked.

For the sake of gay men's health and their pleasure, GMFA, the gay men's health charity, want gay men to be well-informed about their prostate. Whatever your age, there are things you can be doing now to protect the health of your prostate.

Where is the prostate gland?
The prostate gland (or the male G-spot, as it's sometimes known) is located just below your bladder and surrounds the urethra. You can actually massage it through your rectal wall, using a well-lubed finger.

Use your index or middle finger, insert it into your butt, and as it travels in, keep the tip of your finger moving towards the area behind your cock. The prostate will feel like a pickled walnut, and rubbing it gently can cause that orgasmic feeling you get when being fucked.

It's often described as a doughnut that surrounds the urethra; it's walnut sized in young men, getting bigger as you get older. This growth is dependent on the amount of testosterone you produce. The prostate responds to pressure which makes it extremely pleasurable to rub, both externally and internally.

What does it do?
As well as making fucking more pleasurable, the prostate makes and secretes prostatic fluid, one of the five major fluids that make up semen. Semen is the 'bodyguard' for sperm. Sperm make up only about 10% of the semen. The other 90% is, in effect, protection and nourishment for the sperm. The prostatic fluid gives ejaculate its typical milky colour. It makes up about a third of the entire ejaculate volume.

>b>What are the signs that something's wrong with it?
Prostate problems mainly affect men over the age of 45 although they can occur in younger men.

All prostate problems can make the gland enlarged or become inflamed. This may make urinating more difficult. It can affect your quality of life, your health and, especially if you enjoy getting fucked, your sex life.

The kind of symptoms you might have from any prostate problem include a frequent need to urinate (especially at night), difficulty starting to pee, a feeling that your bladder has not emptied properly or pain on peeing or ejaculating.

Prostate cancer is the most serious prostate problem. Apart from problems urinating, other symptoms may include lower back pain, difficulty in getting or keeping an erection, pain in the hips or pelvis or blood in the urine. Some prostate problems are more serious than others. If you are concerned about your symptoms you should make an appointment to see your GP. They may give you a number of tests in order to make a diagnosis.

How can you protect the health of your prostate?
A healthy diet can decrease the risk of encountering prostate problems, including prostate cancer. Better eating for better health includes, avoiding fatty foods and eating less red meat; eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day, including a regular intake of tomatoes; including soya products within your diet as an occasional food product and drinking alcohol only in moderation.

Where can you get further information and support?
The Prostate Cancer Charity's Helpline is 0845 300 8383 (Mon to Fri 10am-4pm plus late night Weds 7pm - 9pm). Alternatively you can call the NHS Direct Helpline 24 hours a day on 0845 4647.

The most accurate and definitive test for the early signs of prostate cancer is an ultrasound. Find out more.
